The edge colour shows the shading rate

Our Raschel knitted shade net has a coloured edge that shows its shading rate, so you can tell the rate of a roll at a glance without reading the label.

Edge colourShading rateApprox. light passing throughNet weight (g/m²)
Yellow50%50%65.00
Red60%40%70.50
Blue70%30%76.00
Purple80%20%87.50

The colour code helps with handling in storage and delivery, and lets buyers check straight away that they have received the rate they ordered. This still works after the net is cut to length, because both edges remain.

What the shading rate means

The figure is the share of sunlight that the net blocks. A 50% net blocks about half the light, and an 80% net about four fifths. The higher the rate, the denser the knit, the greater the weight per square metre and the deeper the shade underneath.

The colour of the net and the colour of the edge are separate things. Green and black nets are both available in all four rates, so always check the rate by the edge colour.

Choosing the right rate

Plants need different amounts of light, and their needs also change with their stage of growth, the season and the growing site. The table below is only a starting point.

Shading rate (edge)Suits
50% (yellow)Plants that need plenty of light but benefit from less midday sun
60% (red)Plants that need moderate light
70% (blue)Plants that prefer partial shade
80% (purple)Plants that need deep shade, and general sun shading

If you are unsure, start with a middle rate and watch the plants. If the leaves scorch or bleach in the sun, choose a higher rate. If the stems grow long and thin with pale, thin leaves because of too little light, choose a lower rate. For commercial crops, please also consult your local agricultural extension officer.

Why a knitted shade net

  • Knitted on a 3-gauge needle, so it can be cut to size straight away without running
  • The open spaces let air through, which helps lower the air temperature during the heat of the day
  • Made from 100% virgin HDPE with UV stabilisers from Europe: weather-resistant, rust-free, non-toxic and 100% recyclable

Sizes and ordering

The net is 200 cm wide and comes in rolls of 10, 90 and 100 m, in green or black, under the Polar Bear and Thai Prasit brands. When you request a quote, please state the shading rate, colour, roll length and quantity.
