A fix for homes where pets keep tearing the insect screens

Dogs and cats keep scratching holes in the screens? Pick the right screen and stop replacing it every few months.

Many of us love having pets at home. The worry grows, though, when they start damaging things around the house. However often we try to teach them, our little troublemakers show no sign of stopping, and we usually end up losing to their cuteness.

One of the things damaged most often is the insect screen on doors and windows. The door where the dog waits for its owner, or the window where the cat climbs to watch birds, often has a hole within a few months. Leave it and mosquitoes come in; replace it and it soon tears again.

Why ordinary screens tear easily

The HDPE and fiberglass screens most homes use have strands of about 0.25–0.40 mm. That is enough to keep mosquitoes out and let air through, but they are not made to take a claw that hooks and pulls. Once one strand breaks, the mesh around it loosens and the hole grows with every scratch.

What makes Pet Mesh different

Pet Mesh is made of heavy polyester strands coated with vinyl (PVC). The strands are about 0.64–0.66 mm thick, roughly twice an ordinary screen, so it is much tougher against claws. It still keeps mosquitoes and insects out, and you can see out clearly.

Replace only the panels that need it

  • There is no need to change every screen in the house: choose the doors and low windows your pets can reach.
  • Your existing frames can be reused: Pet Mesh fits the same groove and spline as an HDPE screen.
  • You can rescreen yourself with basic tools. See how to install Pet Mesh.

Making it last

  • Trim your pets’ claws regularly: it saves both the screens and the furniture.
  • Clean with mild soapy water and a soft brush. A rubber brush or lint roller removes pet hair.
  • Check the spline around the frame now and then and press it back into the groove if it lifts, so the screen stays taut and does not pop out when pushed.

Pet Mesh comes in grey and black, 36 and 48 inches wide, in 2, 10 and 20 m rolls. See the details and specifications of Pet Mesh
