Choose the right rope for the job
| Type | Strengths | Floats | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDPE rope | Flexible, light, resists most chemicals | Yes | General tying, fishing, net work |
| Polypropylene (PP) rope | Higher tensile strength than HDPE, ties securely | Yes | Heavy-duty work, bundling, mooring |
| Polyester rope | Soft to the touch, easy to knot, high tensile strength | No | Flag lines, ropes handled often |
In general, polyester rope stands up to sunlight better than PP and HDPE. PP and HDPE are lighter and float, which makes them the usual choice near water.
What sunlight does to rope
UV light slowly breaks down the plastic. The surface fades, dries out, turns powdery and becomes brittle, and the rope loses strength before the damage is obvious. Rope that stays in the sun should be checked more often than rope used under cover.
Use it so it does not wear out early
- Avoid sharp edges: where rope passes over steel corners or concrete edges, use a sleeve or padding against abrasion.
- Size it generously: for heavy loads, use a thicker rope or several ropes so none works at its limit all the time.
- Knots weaken rope: a knot is usually where rope breaks first, so always leave a margin of strength.
- Keep it away from heat: plastic rope softens and melts. Keep it off exhaust pipes, stoves and very hot surfaces.
Storage
- Store rope in a shaded, dry place, off the ground. Do not leave coils lying in the sun.
- Rinse off mud or seawater with fresh water and let the rope dry before storing it.
- Coil it loosely, without kinks or heavy weights on top for long periods.
Check it before every use
Replace rope that shows loosened strands, broken fibers, a powdery or stiff surface, heavy fading or cuts. General-purpose rope should never be used for overhead lifting or anything that keeps people safe: that work needs equipment certified to its own standards.
The service life of plastic products depends on sunlight, temperature, humidity, chemicals and installation. Any figure is an estimate from typical use, not a guarantee.
